A unit of fiber thickness representing the weight of 9,000m of yarn in grams (g)
A unit of measurement for linear mass density defined as 1 denier (1D) when 9,000m of yarn weighs 1g. The lower the number, the finer the yarn and the lighter the fabric; the higher the number, the thicker and heavier the yarn becomes. It is mainly used to indicate the thickness of filament synthetic fibers such as nylon and polyester.

10D–20D is mainly used for the outer fabrics of windbreakers or lightweight down jackets. 40D–70D is widely used for general outerwear and functional windproof clothing, while thick yarns of 210D or higher are applied to gear that must withstand friction, such as bags, backpacks, and tent floors.
When choosing
Check the symbol D or d attached after the number in the product specifications. If you want light weight and a soft touch, choose a low denier of 10D–30D; if you need abrasion resistance and a sturdy texture, select a high-denier fabric of 100D or higher.
Additional information
- Yarn count
- Mainly used for natural fibers; because it is based on a fixed weight system, a higher number means a finer yarn.
- Tex (tex)
- An international standard (ISO) linear mass density unit representing the weight (g) of 1,000m of yarn.
