Since this parka is made of waterproof fabric, why are the front closure and neckline wrapped in multiple layers?
This is to verify the practical use in actual wear of the layered devices placed throughout the zipper, neck, and cuffs, even though waterproof outer fabric that withstands rainy weather is used.
Even if the fabric blocks rain, the zipper, neckline, and cuffs are designed to close in multiple layers to block wind seeping through the gaps.
Although Toray DELFY waterproof fabric capable of withstanding up to 10,000mm of rain is used for the outer fabric, clothing is a three-dimensional object with openings and seams, so fabric alone cannot block all seeping wind and rain[1]. In particular, for the front closure where cold air and moisture can easily penetrate, both a zipper and snaps are provided, and an inner placket and outer placket structure with fabric layered inside and outside is applied[2]. The plackets serve to cover and conceal the interlocking gap of the zipper so that rainwater or wind does not leak in.
To block wind blowing against the neck and head, a double neck structure wrapping the neck is added to an integrated hood design[3]. Elastic banding and a Velcro strap are attached together at the cuffs, allowing them to be tightened to fit around the wrists to cut off the inflow of cold wind[4]. In addition, by pulling and tightening the dual stoppers at the front and back of the hood and the hem stopper, the hem can be narrowed to fit closely against the body so the bottom of the garment does not lift up even on days with strong winds[5].
Apart from the waterproof performance of the fabric itself, it has not yet been confirmed whether seam-sealing tape treatment is applied to prevent water from seeping through the seams.
