How do the uses differ between the smooth gloss on the inside of the vessel and the matte pattern on the outside?

When a vessel is placed on a dining table, what catches the eye first is the graphic wrapped around the outer surface, but the area where food is held and utensils come and go is the inner bottom. Maruhiro's Takahiro Yasuda TAGAYA series configured the finishes of these two areas differently. For both the bowl and plate, the lines and patterns on the outer surface are brought out with a black matte texture, while the inner surface where food touches is treated with a smooth gloss^[1][2].

This distinction in finish is a composition designed to balance practical convenience with visual completeness. Generally, a glossy glaze fills fine gaps on the ceramic surface with glassiness, helping prevent food seasonings or grease from permeating the vessel and making dishwashing easier. On the other hand, while a matte finish shows a calm and solid grain without light reflection, the fine irregularities on the glazed surface make it easier for marks or stains to remain when food touches it directly.

Therefore, the practical convenience of frequent serving and washing was entrusted to the smooth inner gloss, while the distinct texture provided by the black-and-white graphics was captured in the outer matte finish.
