Why is the bottom rim of the rice bowl unglazed?
When holding the bottom of the bowl, you may wonder if the finish is incomplete because the rough texture of the clay touches your fingertips, unlike the smooth upper surface.
The bottom surface of the rice bowl is finished without glaze, so the rough texture inherent to clay can be felt, and this varies slightly from product to product.
When you wrap your hands around the bowl, the bottom rim area touched by your fingertips feels quite different from the smooth inside of the bowl. Leaving the bottom of the bowl unglazed when firing ceramics is a standard production method for making pottery. Because glaze melts inside the high-temperature kiln and turns into a glassy substance, if the bottom rim were also glazed, the bowl would stick directly to the kiln floor plate and could not be separated.
HORIE TOUKI's dragon pattern hand-drawing rice bowl is also unglazed on the bottom surface, conveying the somewhat rough texture characteristic of clay[1]. The degree of bottom roughness varies by product, and uneven glaze application or areas with less glaze may naturally show[2][3].

We have not yet confirmed whether the bottom rim undergoes a separate polishing process to reduce scratches on tabletop surfaces.
