Is it okay to soak a ceramic bowl in cold water right away for dishwashing after eating hot food?

Often, right after finishing a meal, people immediately fill the bowl with water to soak it before food residues dry. In such cases, one wonders about the care guidelines regarding whether it is fine to put a bowl that still retains heat straight into cold water.

hmmm editorial answer

Because a sudden temperature change can cause hairline cracks on the surface, you should soak the bowl in water only after its heat has cooled down sufficiently.

In ceramics shaped from clay and baked, the inner clay and the outer glaze expand and contract differently in response to heat. HORIE TOUKI explains that if the temperature changes abruptly, such as putting a hot bowl straight into cold water, cracks can form on the surface[1]. This is because when cold water touches it while it is hot, the glaze contracts rapidly, and unable to withstand the difference in volume with the inner clay, gaps develop on the surface.

Therefore, rather than putting it in the sink and running cold water immediately after finishing a meal, it is better to wait a while until the bowl's temperature drops naturally. Soaking it in water after the heat has subsided to the touch and it has become similar to room temperature allows you to use it for a long time without surface damage.

Unanswered questions

Other than the caution regarding sudden temperature changes, specific thermal shock resistance standards that the bowl can withstand have not yet been confirmed.
